TSO Behind the Scenes Workshop

Get experience photographing TSO musicians in rehearsal and backstage!

Some of the most beautiful and exciting locations for photography are often difficult to access, and one of the biggest challenges is capturing good photos in low light conditions. In this Behind the Scenes you'll get the exclusive opportunity to take pictures of Toronto Symphony Orchestra musicians in rehearsal in glorious Roy Thomson Hall, while learning how to overcome various issues. Plus you'll get exclusive backstage access to capture photos of select musicians with their instruments.

A portion of the workshop fees will benefit the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra

Course Outline:

- Exposure basics for shooting in low light
- Dealing with camera motion and stabilizing
- Photographing subjects in motion
- Composition and perspective: creating engaging images
- Focusing on details: capturing close ups of artists and instruments

Upcoming Session - May 26th: 9:00am to 1:00pm

8:45am – 9:00am - Participants arrive, have opportunity to chat with instructor and get settled
9:00am – 10:00am - Lesson
10:00am – 10:15am - Set up for portraits session in the South Lobby
10:15am – 11:00am - Take portrait photos of musicians.
11:00am – 11:15 am - Break
11:15am – 11:30am - Set up in the auditorium to take orchestra photos
11:30am – 12:30pm - Participants take photos of the first half of rehearsal
13:30pm – 1:00pm – Wrap up, final questions for the instructor etc. *Timing depends on when the orchestra breaks.

Who Should Attend?

Individuals that are comfortable with their cameras and want to explore creative settings to take their photography skills to the next level.

What To Bring To Class:

- DSLR or Compact System Camera with manual shooting mode
- Camera lenses – Wide Angle zoom (18-55mm), portrait lens (50mm or 85mm "prime" lens) and telephoto (70-200mm or 70-300mm) are recommended.
- Fully charged battery
- Memory Cards

- We recommend that you arrive by 8:45am. Class begins promptly at 9am.
- Time lines may be modified at any time without prior notice. All registered participants will be contacted in the event of any changes.

  • Pre-registration and payment is required for all courses.
  • All courses begin promptly at stated times.
  • Henry's Learning Lab reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course without notice.
  • In the event of a course cancellation or postponement, all pre-registered attendees will be notified to arrange another suitable date.
  • Customers may reschedule or refund registrations up to 48 hrs prior to the course start time at no charge.
  • If less than 48 hrs notice is given, up until the course start time, only rescheduling will be offered and an administrative fee will apply. (See Fee Table)
  • Refunds will not be issued and rescheduling will not be permitted, if requested after the stated course start time. Missed courses are not eligible for refunds or rebooking.
  • Course credits with Henry's Learning Lab will be valid for a period of 12 months from the date of purchase of the original course.
